Manufacturing Management

Overview of manufacturing systems and operations. Covers production types, lean manufacturing principles, quality management concepts, and how raw materials move through a production environment to become finished products.

What I Learned

Manufacturing process types — distinguishing job shop, batch, and continuous flow production, and understanding when each is appropriate.

Lean manufacturing principles — identifying the 8 types of waste, applying 5S methodology, and understanding value stream mapping at an introductory level.

Quality management — inspection strategies, statistical process control concepts, and the distinction between defect detection and defect prevention.

Production planning fundamentals — scheduling approaches, capacity planning considerations, and basic inventory management concepts.

Industry standards and safety — overview of relevant standards and safety regulations that govern manufacturing operations in Ontario.

About the Course

Manufacturing Management provides the operational context for engineering work. Understanding how a manufacturing facility runs — its processes, constraints, and priorities — is essential for any engineer whose designs will actually be built.

The course bridges the gap between technical design and production reality. A drawing that is perfect on paper but impossible to manufacture efficiently is a design failure — this course builds the awareness to avoid that.

Topics are grounded in real manufacturing environments, with examples drawn from industries relevant to the engineering technology sector in Ontario.
