MGMT IM153  ·  Semester 1

Ontario Employment Legislation

Survey of Ontario's key workplace statutes and their practical application. Covers the Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, with applied project work in workplace communication design.

What I Learned

Employment Standards Act (ESA) — core provisions including minimum wage, hours of work, overtime entitlements, vacation pay, and termination notice requirements for Ontario workers.

Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) — employer and worker rights and obligations, the Internal Responsibility System, right to refuse unsafe work, and role of the Ministry of Labour.

Ontario Human Rights Code — prohibited grounds of discrimination in employment and services, duty to accommodate, and the role of the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.

Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) — WSIB coverage, the no-fault insurance system, worker entitlements on injury, and employer reporting obligations.

Communicating legislation — translating complex legal text into clear, accessible workplace communications — applied through the PSA poster project.

About the Course

Every engineer who works in Ontario does so inside a legal framework that governs how workplaces operate. MGMT IM153 builds the baseline literacy needed to understand those rules — from what an employer must post on the wall to what a worker can legally refuse to do.

The course places particular emphasis on the OHSA, which is directly relevant to engineering roles in industrial, manufacturing, and nuclear environments where workplace hazards are real and regulated.

The PSA poster project develops a different skill: not just understanding the law, but presenting it in a way that people will actually read and use.
